What is chalk varnish?
Chalk paints have been around since ancient times. This is the name given to colours that are based on mineral components. In addition to these ingredients, chalk varnishes also contain water and pigments. The mineral components of chalk varnishes are deposited on the surface when painted and create velvety, matt surfaces on which pastel colour shades in particular come into their own. Chalk varnish is available in various gloss levels. Matt varnishes, such as the CosyColours chalk varnish, are particularly suitable for upcycling.
A quick and easy way to a vintage look: matt varnish in pastel colours
CosyColours is a perfect vintage paint chalk paint. The matt chalk varnishes give surfaces a very special finish that makes them look soft and somewhat rustic. They are therefore particularly suitable for furniture decorations with a vintage look. With CosyColours varnish Matt, you can also embellish plastic and metal surfaces and even wall tiles that are not subject to much wear and tear after applying a primer. Yes, you can even paint fabrics with it.
In some cases, priming with MissPompadour To Bond & Block can be useful. If you want to make your wooden furniture even more hard-wearing at the end, use either a wood wax from our MissPompadour To Wax-Polish range or the To Seal topcoat. A thin layer of wax makes your surfaces easier to care for, gives them a sophisticated shimmer and enhances the depth of colour. The To Seal topcoat creates a scratch-resistant surface that is durable and easy to clean. In any case, CosyColours chalk paint gives you a surface with an infinitely soft and gentle effect.

Questions & Answers
What is the difference between chalk varnish and other varnishes?
Chalk varnish is an environmentally friendly varnish on an organic basis. It also contains water and pigments. In contrast to many conventional varnishes, CosyColours chalk varnishes contain only the smallest possible quantities of solvents and are certified as VOC free. CosyColours chalk varnish creates elegant, dull matt surfaces that bring out the best in pastel colours.
How do I use chalk varnish?
Stir the chalk varnish carefully after opening the tin so that the pigments are evenly distributed. Then pour some of the chalk varnish into a paint tray. We recommend that you always apply 2 coats, even if the varnish covers the first time. This will make your colour layer thicker and longer lasting! Allow the paint to dry for approx. 4 hours between coats.
If you want to finish a piece of furniture in a shabby chic style after painting, wait at least 4 hours after the last coat. Then you can sand the edges to your liking to achieve an authentic vintage look
When do I need to prime or seal chalk varnish?
In most cases, you can achieve a perfect result with CosyColours CosyColours Weekend Green chalk paint chalk varnish alone - without priming or sealing. As a rule, you can simply paint over old paintwork without sanding if the old layers of paint are still sufficiently stable.
Sometimes, however, priming is advisable. MissPompadour To Bond & Block is perfect for many surfaces. Use it to prime stained, discoloured or bleeding wood or wood with lots of knotholes to create an even base for the CosyColours chalk varnish. Even if you want to work on very smooth surfaces made of glass, tiles or plastic, we recommend a primer coat of To Bond & Block so that your colour can adhere better. You should also prime metal paintwork if the metal is unpainted or the varnish has flaked off. If it is raw iron or rusty metal, remove the rust and use a rust protection primer before priming.
You can additionally protect the painted surfaces after painting with MissPompadour To Seal or use the wood and furniture wax line To Wax-Polish as a finish.
What tools do I need to apply the varnish?
Of course, you need the right tools for a good work result. That's why we've put together a range of high-quality tools for you. From masking tape with natural rubber to our environmentally friendly paint trays without any plastic, to the varnish roller and our LittlePomp brushn - you'll find everything you need for easy implementation of your painting projects. :)
