Sealing Chalk Paint
4 min reading time
chalk paint is a wonderful way to give walls and furniture a velvety, powdery look. It can be a good idea to apply a topcoat to surfaces that are subject to heavy wear, such as in the kitchen, hallway or on furniture surfaces that are used a lot. We'll show you whether and which topcoat you need for your chalk paint and how you can easily apply it.
What can I use to seal chalk paint?
A topcoat of chalk paint is always appropriate if the painted surface is subject to heavy wear. The advantage of a topcoat is that it makes the painted surface significantly more hard-wearing and dirt-resistant.
- sealing wall paints, such as our LittlePomp chalk paints, is particularly important and sensible in corridors and stairwells, on cloakrooms or in children's rooms. Our To Seal - MissPompadour Topcoat provides you with valuable services here - especially if you want to seal the chalk paint in your kitchen, mainly behind the worktop. You get a wipe-clean, easy-care surface - the matt character of the chalk paint is completely retained.
- For furniture that is used frequently - especially if you have painted it with wall paint and not with varnishes - the topcoat is essential to increase the durability of the colour. Do you have surfaces that are already painted with CosyColours chalk varnish, for example? Apply To Seal. This will give your chalk paint a matt finish.
- Floors painted with chalk paints and varnishes - whether wood, tiles - or even stairs made of stone or wood should definitely be sealed so that the surface can withstand daily wear and tear.
If you want to seal your chalk paint, you have various options - clear varnish, wax or oil. Have a look at our topcoats in the shop, you're sure to find the right one for your project!
Seal chalk paint with clear varnish
If you choose clear varnish as the topcoat for your chalk paint, you will get a particularly easy-care surface. This is an advantage for frequently used pieces of furniture, such as tables or chairs. varnishes dry quickly and can be painted over without any problems. We recommend using varnishes, especially for surfaces that are subject to really heavy use, as they create a much more robust surface than waxes, for example.
Sealing chalk paint with wax
If you want to seal less exposed surfaces, you can also use waxes. Our waxes are a great way to give your furniture a shabby style. By using coloured waxes, you can accentuate textures particularly well and achieve a silky, refined surface. However, please note that waxes are not suitable for areas that are exposed to splashing water.
Sealing chalk paint with oil
Furniture painted with chalk paint can also be sealed with oils. Oils create a luminous look and make the colour shine. To seal chalk paints outdoors, e.g. on garden furniture, you can use tung oil, for example. Hemp oil can also be used indoors. However, please note that oils take longer to dry completely and can be wiped off.
Step-by-step guide: Sealing chalk paint
Sealing chalk paint is very easy - whether you want to seal wall paint or furniture or are looking for a topcoat for your wooden stairs. Below we provide you with step-by-step instructions for the most important work steps and the application of the various topcoats:
Step 1: Preparation
Firstly, start with a thorough cleaning. The surface should be free of dust and fluff, otherwise these will stick to the varnish or furniture wax and you will end up with an uneven surface. If you have not already done so, remove any hinges or handles from furniture that should not come into contact with the topcoat. If they cannot be removed, protect them with adhesive tape. If you paint your surface before priming, leave the paint to dry for 24 hours.
Step 2: Apply topcoat
- Apply a thin coat ofTo Seal - MissPompadour Topcoat with a brush or a short pile paint roller. After about 2-4 hours, you can apply a second coat if necessary. If you paint over a fresh coat, the topcoat needs about 14 days to cure completely and be fully resilient. If your surface is unpainted or was painted a long time ago (more than 14 days), the topcoat will have hardened after 3 days.
- Furniture wax can be applied with a lint-free cloth or a brush. Our CosyColours Wax Brush is ideal for this. Apply a thin layer first. With coloured wood wax in particular, you should start with less to avoid covering the entire colour shade of the chalk paint. After approx. 30 minutes, you can remove any excess wax if necessary or apply a second coat. Be brave and try out what you like!
- Oils are best applied with a lint-free cloth. Plan at least 2 coats here too. The drying time varies and can take up to 1 week.
Step 3: Polish the surface
If you are using waxes or oils, you should polish the surface with a lint-free cloth to achieve a particularly beautiful finish. Wait approx. 24 hours for waxes and approx. 12 hours for oils before you start polishing.
Conclusion: Seal chalk paint properly with MissPompadour
Whether on chalk paint green, grey or pink - applying a topcoat is an important step in making your chalk paint particularly hard-wearing. You can easily extend the life of the paint and make the surface easier to care for, especially on surfaces that are subject to heavy use. You will definitely enjoy your painting project for a long time to come!
