Preparation: How to choose the right colour & paint quantity
The best colour to paint your walls with depends on a number of factors. We explain below what you need to pay particular attention to.
What do you want to paint?
Depending on the substrate, you should take note of a few differences in the preparation:
- To Paint wallpaper, first check whether it is still firm. If this is not the case, it could peel off due to the moisture in the paint. If this is the case, it makes more sense to remove it first.
- For non-woven wallpaper, we recommend painting with thinned paint first. Due to their structure, they absorb more paint, which increases your consumption. If you dilute the first coat of paint, the wallpaper can soak up water.
- If you are painting fresh plaster, prime with a deep penetrating primer. Freshly plastered walls also absorb wall paint. If the plaster is older, simply dust the wall and then you can start painting. Simply use our wall paints for plaster.
- If you are painting directly onto plasterboard, we also recommend using a primer beforehand. It is advisable to use a deep primer from the same company as your wall paint, but it is not absolutely necessary. If you are using MissPompadour Paints, use our To Prime Walls - Wall Primer. You can find out exactly how to prime your wall in our priming walls and ceilings blog
- Do your walls show signs of damage? Find out how to repair stains, holes and cracks on the inside of your walls in our blog Repair stains, holes and cracks.
Which room do you want to paint?
Once you have decided on a room to paint, think about what functions the colour should fulfil. Every room has different requirements.
- Washable wall paint is particularly suitable for hallways and entrances, as the odd splash of mud is often unavoidable despite all precautions. Its smooth texture is also skilfully used in the kitchen. For an exceptionally smooth surface, use MissPompadour - The Functional Wall Paint.
- If you want to apply new paint in the children's room, it is certainly important to you that the wall paint does not smell unpleasant or release harmful substances into the environment. This is also important in rooms such as the living room and bedroom, as you spend a lot of time there. Use MissPompadour - The Valuable Wall Paintfor this , as it is not only splash-free, but also impresses with its opacity.
- You can also use our chalk paints from LittlePomp. They are also extremely odourless and allow moisture to pass through easily. Chalk paints also impress with their velvety matt appearance.
How do you find the right paint quantity?
In our shop you will find a paint quantity calculator for each colour, always directly next to or below the respective colour shade. Select the specified surface and enter how many square metres you want to paint. It will show you exactly how much paint you should order for how much area for 2 coats.
Masking walls properly for different effects
You don't have to give up your creativity when painting walls. Paint a pattern instead of a single colour or use a beautiful combination of colours. This is also helpful if you can't decide on a colour shade.
- If you want to paint walls with a border, for example, tape the border to the desired width. You can find out how to proceed in detail in our blog Painting walls with a border.
- Perhaps you would like to paint walls with a pattern? To do this, you can either mask off a pattern with tape or use stencils. You can find detailed instructions in the blog Painting walls with a pattern. If you want to emphasise a particular piece of furniture, you can also paint a round arch.
- Another design element with wall paints is to paint the walls in two colours. It is possible to arrange the different colours horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Depending on your choice of colour, you can make a room appear larger, smaller, higher or lower. Our blog Painting walls half-height explains exactly what you should bear in mind
- If you love colour, you can also paint the ceiling in addition to the walls. The very brave can also paint a well-lit room or wall black. When done right, painting a wall black is far less gloomy than you might think.
With all your painting projects, preparation is crucial for success. Careful masking with the right materials is particularly important when painting walls to ensure a good result. The surface must be clean. Press the tape down firmly to achieve sharp edges. Remove it after painting while the paint is still wet. You can read all the details and how to mask difficult surfaces correctly in the blog Masking for painting.
Paint walls properly: Instructions from MissPompadour
Here's how you can go about realising your wall-painting ideas:
Step 1: Select colour
- MissPompadour - The Valuable Wall Paint: Our eco wall paint with excellent opacity. It gives you a matt, velvety and robust coat of paint in abrasion class 1 and is suitable for all rooms.
- MissPompadour - The Functional Wall Paint: In the event that the area to be painted is subject to more stress and contamination, you are on the safe side with our washable wall paint.
- LittlePomp chalk paints: The paint gives your wall a velvety matt finish, with the powdery surface typical of chalk paints.
Step 2: Prepare the wall
The wall should be clean and dust-free. If you are painting on a highly absorbent surface, such as fresh, unpainted plaster or plasterboard, pre-paint with a primer such as To Prime Walls so that the wall does not absorb too much of the paint. Careful and thorough masking of window and door frames and skirting boards is somewhat time-consuming, but you should not neglect this step to achieve a beautiful result.
Step 3: Paint
Stir the paint well and thoroughly so that all the pigments are evenly distributed. Pour the paint into a paint tray to avoid contaminating the original tin. Roller your paint roller thoroughly in it so that the paint is evenly distributed on the roller. Small areas around the edge of your wall can be worked on well with a brush.
Paint the surface quickly and evenly with the roller. Then leave the paint to dry for around 4 to 6 hours and then start the second coat. Remember to carefully remove the adhesive tape while the paint is still wet. And now you can put your feet up with a cup of coffee or tea and let your new wall take effect on you.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions about painting walls
How do I get clean edges when painting?
Press the adhesive tape down firmly. If the surface is uneven, such as plaster or woodchip, you should seal the edges with either acrylic or paint so that no paint can run under the adhesive tape.
How do you paint a wall evenly?
The best way to do this is with a paint roller. Roll it out thoroughly and evenly in the paint tray so that the roller is evenly wetted with the paint. Then you can quickly and evenly roll the paint onto the wall. Make sure that you always work wet-on-wet and that there are no areas with excessive paint application.
Pro tip: It is best to use a medium paint roller, as the chalk paints in particular are rather heavy and can quickly tire your arm.
When do I need to prime walls before painting?
You must prime if the wall has not yet been painted and there is a risk that it will "thirstily" soak up the paint. In this case, you should pre-paint with a deep primer or alternatively dilute the first coat of paint with a little water.
What colour for wallpapered walls?
All our wall paints are suitable for wallpapered walls.
Can I paint my wall with chalk paint?
In principle, you can paint all walls with chalk paint.
Do you paint the ceiling first or the walls first?
You can simplify the work process by painting the ceiling first and then the walls. This saves you unnecessary masking.
