1. Before Painting
1.1 What should I use to prepare the surfaces? Do I have to sand off the old varnish?
Our paints really do adhere to almost all surfaces. However, the most important thing is that the surface is clean and stable. If an old coat of paint flakes off, it must be removed. Our To Sand is suitable for this. If the substrate is stable, thorough cleaning with To Clean is usually sufficient. You can lightly roughen or matt sand particularly smooth and stressed surfaces or apply a thin coat of To Bond & Block - MissPompadour Stainblock and Stainblock primer.
1. 2 What is a Stainblock?
A stainblock like the To Bond & Block - MissPompadour Stainblock & Stainblock prevents substances from leaking out of painted wood and discolouring your new coat of paint. Stain = stain. Incidentally, a coat of paint with a stainblock also ensures that old furniture no longer smells!
1. 3 Does the Stainblock also work as a primer?
To Bond & Block has the properties of a primer in addition to its blocking properties. It therefore actually combines both functions and is suitable for a wide range of substrates. It must be applied with good coverage.
1. 4 What is a primer?
You can use a primer such as To Bond & Block - MissPompadour Stainblock and Stainblock to improve the adhesion of the paint to smooth surfaces. We recommend a well-covering primer with primer on high-gloss surfaces, plastics and smooth tiles and all floor tiles.
1. 5 Can I paint over silicone?
Silicone cannot be painted over without a special primer. With the To Seal Silicone - MissPompadour Silicone Sealer you can prime silicone joints and paint over them after about one hour. Please apply the sealer very thinly.
1. 6 When can I paint over the primer?
The drying time always depends on the ambient conditions and the substrate you want to paint. Depending on this, it can be between 3 hours and a whole day. To test whether the primer can be painted over, you can rub over it lightly with a damp cloth. If nothing comes off, you can paint with the colour of your choice.
1. 7 What are colour cards?
Colour cards provide you with an opportunity to view colour shades in their original and true colours and thus compare them better. You can use them to see your desired colour shade in different lighting conditions and in different rooms. Please note that the colour shade will appear darker on a large surface than on the small section of the colour card. At MissPompadour you can buy colour cards from all our manufacturers.
2. When painting
2. 1 How many coats are required?
Our colours have a very high opacity. Sometimes one coat is enough, with two it usually becomes really great! If a very dark surface is painted with a very light colour, or if the surface is very absorbent and uneven, several coats may be necessary. You can achieve a lot here with a suitable primer. And don't forget: Reds are sometimes unpredictable divas! Please give the paint about four hours between coats before you continue painting.
2. 2 Which colour is right for my project?
With our practical selection guide, you can find the right colour for your project step by step. And if you prefer personal support, our customer advisory service is there to help you in word and deed.
2. 3 Can paint from different manufacturers be used for one project?
Yes, you can always choose the colour combination that suits you best. You can also use primer and topcoat from a different manufacturer. However, you should only mix colours from the same manufacturer and of the same colour quality. If you are unsure about the different colour variations and the respective surface structure, just ask our customer advisory service!
2. 4 Can I tint the colour? If yes, with what?
Colours from one manufacturer can be mixed with each other in the respective colour quality. You can also mix your individual colour shade with tinting concentrate. Please note that you should mix the right amount for your project to avoid colour differences.
2. 5 How much paint do I need?
You will find a paint calculator for each colour in the shop. It shows you exactly how much paint you need. You only have to specify how many m² you want to paint and choose the right surface from the list. You will always find the paint calculator directly next to or under the colour shade. However, the specified amount may vary depending on the substrate.
2. 6 How can I avoid overlap marks and an uneven surface when painting?
You should use enough paint, an even painting technique and the right speed for a homogeneous application of paint. It is also advisable to paint manageably large areas so that you can work wet in wet. Then the transition will dry out evenly. And it is best to paint only 1-2 times loosely over each surface without applying pressure. If the paint application is still uneven, you can even it out in the next coat. You're sure to get the hang of it very quickly.
2. 7 Can the paint be thinned to preserve the wood grain?
In principle, you can do this. However, diluting the paint too much can reduce its durability. If you are painting a heavily used surface, such as a staircase, we would advise against this. You should also bear in mind that you may need to prime with a stain block, which does not give an even colour result. A thin coat of paint would not compensate for this.
3. After painting
3. 1 When can I apply a topcoat?
Under normal environmental conditions (temperature, air exchange, humidity), you can apply To Seal - MissPompadour Topcoat after 24 hours. Even longer breaks are no problem. Then just clean thoroughly before painting.
3. 2 When can I load painted surfaces again?
Our varnishes are dry on the surface and can be painted over after a few hours. However, they are only fully cured after approx. 14 days. Of course, you can also use your painted furniture before this. You should just be a little more careful with it in the first few weeks and avoid heavy loads.
Painted floors can be walked on again on socks after approx. 24 hours. You can lay out cotton cloths on paths that are walked on a lot in the first few weeks to protect the paint. However, please remove these overnight so that the paint can cure properly. Please do not do any scratch tests with your fingernail. Give your paint time to harden and enjoy the result! The thicker the layer, the longer it will take to harden. Even after 14 days, the varnish layer will continue to become more stable from day to day.
3. 3 How well does the paint hold on stressed surfaces?
Only colours with excellent properties make it into our range. Because durability is also a central point in terms of sustainability. But even the best paint is not invulnerable and wear and tear increases with use. If you're not sure, we'll be happy to advise you on how to approach your painting project to get the best possible result. And we promise: We will also tell you honestly if painting is not the best choice for your project! Click here for our customer advice.
3. 4 Can I wash off the painted surfaces?
After the colours have dried well, you can wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth and also use mild cleaners. You should avoid chlorine and disinfectants. Our To Clean is also suitable for cleaning after painting.
3. 5 How can I dispose of empty paint cans?
Empty cans can be disposed of with household waste. Paint residues may not be thrown away but must be declared as hazardous waste at the recycling centre.
3. 6 What is the best way to clean brushes and rollers?
Brushes and rollers are best cleaned immediately after painting. Once the paint has dried, it is difficult to remove. Use lukewarm water and a mild brush soap, no harsh cleaners. It is best to hang your tools up to dry - brushes with the bristles facing downwards so that the water does not run back into the ferrule. Do not place your tools on a radiator to dry as this can affect their quality.
3. 7 What is the shelf life of the paints and lacquers?
Our MissPompadour wall paints have an unopened shelf life of at least 24 months - our varnishes 12 months. But even if you have already opened the tins/buckets, you can store the paints for a long time. It is important that you take care not to get dirt in the paint. Always use a paint tray and close the can immediately after use so that the paint does not dry out. Small pieces of paint can be stored in clean screw-top jars. Make sure that the jars are always tightly closed. It is best to store the colours in a cool (frost-free), dry and dark place.
4. About paint
4. 1 What does "bleeding out" mean?
When we talk about bleeding, we mean yellowish discolouration in the paint. Some woods, e.g. oak, tropical woods and softwoods, release natural substances which then discolour the new coat of paint. Some stains and glazes or heavy exposure to nicotine can also lead to bleeding. If you are planning to paint with a light colour shade, you should prime with MissPompadour To Bond & Block to prevent this. This step is not necessary with dark colours because the bleeding is not visible with dark colours.
4. 2 Which coating tool do I need?
Our range includes all the brushes and rollers you need for your painting project. Whether you work with a brush or a roller is really a matter of taste. With our To Paint - fine MissPompadour brushes, you can not only work on all corners, edges and hard-to-reach places. It can also be used to paint larger areas without streaking. If you are more the roller type, you can work with the varnish roller for a perfect painting result. You can also use it to paint walls. If you want to use a larger roller for your wall, you can use the paint roller in 18 cm. We do not recommend using a larger roller, as our wall paints have quite a high own weight and larger rollers quickly become very heavy.
4. 3 Can I also work with a spray system?
Yes, for example with the two spray systems from Wagner that we offer in our shop. You need to dilute the paint with 10% water and can use it to spray surfaces as well as work on details that are difficult to access.
4. 4 How do I actually paint... ?
Do you know our magazine? You'll find lots of useful tips for all your painting projects, sorted by topic, e. g. painting the kitchen, tiles or wooden furniture. Take a look!
4. 5 Can I also paint tiles?
Yes, a new coat of paint is also possible for tiles! Our stable varnishes have already made many customers with old tiles happy. You can achieve a great transformation yourself quickly and with manageable effort and thus bridge the time until the big renovation. With our To Bond & Block - MissPompadour Stainblock, you can create a non-slip surface on smooth tiles. Our stable varnishes in many great colour shades leave nothing to be desired. We are happy to recommend the right topcoat for areas subject to wear and tear. Take a look at the article in our magazine, where we show you step by step how to tackle your project.
4. 6 How do I paint wooden furniture?
For wooden furniture, it is first important that you have a durable and clean surface. If there are loose varnishrests on it, you can remove them with our sandpaper To Sand.
Then it is important that you clean thoroughly. You can do this reliably with To Clean. How you then need to pre-treat depends on the furniture and the colour shades you have chosen.
If you want to paint with a light colour shade and the surface is untreated or painted with an unknown colour, you should pre-treat with To Bond & Block to ensure that the wood does not bleed into your new coat. In the event that your paint discolours, you should apply a second coat to ensure that the wood does not bleed.
And then you can get started with the colour. If you want to paint with a dark colour, you don't need to use the stainblock. Have a look at the article on this in our magazine.
4. 7 Can you paint plastic veneer?
Yes, you can also paint your Swedish shelves and chests of drawers as well as your plastic kitchen. This works best if you prime with a primer like To Bond & Blocken. Have a look at the article on this in our magazine!
4. 8 Can you also paint worktops in the kitchen?
In principle, you can also paint a worktop. Plastic and stone worktops are best primed with MissPompadour To Bond & Block. Then you can paint with the varnish in the colour of your choice. MissPompadour Eggshell Varnish is particularly suitable. You can either apply one more coat or seal at the end. Please note that a painted worktop is never as robust as an unpainted one! A worktop is often subject to very heavy loads. Moisture around the sink should always be absorbed immediately and if you are cutting something, a chopping board is essential. Whether you paint your worktop is something you should always consider carefully and certainly depends to a large extent on how passionately you use your kitchen.

7. Questions for MissPompadour
8.1 What is MissPompadour actually? Is it just an online shop, or do you also produce your own colours?
We originally specialised in chalk paints. We now also have our own colour lines with our MissPompadour Paints and LittlePomp chalk paints. We have opted for a sustainable form of production for our own brands. For example, the water-based MissPompadour Paints contain a large proportion of bio-based raw materials as binders. They are obtained from second-generation biomass. A light-coloured oil is obtained from the residues of olive and sunflower biomass. And the mixture of the best properties of different oils forms the basis of our innovative colour technology. The production of this binder, which is at least 96% renewable, is therefore not at the expense of agricultural land or food production for humans and animals. In addition, the second-generation biomass is obtained from raw materials grown in Europe. Our colours are also environmentally friendly thanks to their long durability. This is because an extremely stable surface with maximum durability does not need to be repainted so quickly, which saves resources.
8.2 What does sustainability mean at MissPompadour?
We do a lot to work as sustainably as possible. It's not just that our own brand MissPompadour is produced sustainably. We also use recycled packaging and do not use plastic. With the help of our shredder, we use old cardboard boxes to pack your paint tins and with GoGreen shipping from DHL, your parcel will arrive 100% climate-neutral. We also avoid sending printed invoices for the sake of the environment. We generate most of the electricity we need using solar panels on the warehouse roof, which we also use to power our vehicles. We are constantly working to become even better in terms of sustainability.
