Want white tiles? Paint them with tile paint!
Especially in the 70s and 80s, coloured tiles, often with patterns, were considered beautiful. But anyone who still has such tiles in their home today often longs for a change. Is the only solution to knock all the tiles off the wall? Fortunately not: simply paint them with white varnish!

This is how it works: Paint wall tiles
Here you'll find everything you need for your project. ⮕
Painting tiles white - is it even possible?
Before you tackle a project like painting your tiles, you probably have a lot of questions. Does the tile paint even bond on smooth surfaces and in wet rooms? What do I do with the (silicone) joints? Does white tile paint also reliably cover dark colour shades? And many more. We'll help you find the right answers here.
The right preparation is very important. If you want to use tile paint, it is essential to clean your tiles thoroughly. Be sure to use a mild cleaner such as MissPompadour To Clean - aggressive cleaning agents that are highly alkaline or contain chlorine can destroy a subsequent coat of paint.
Before painting, you should also apply a primer so that the paint can adhere well to the smooth surface. To Bond & Block also creates an even surface and silicone joints are no problem: Paint over them with MissPompadour To Seal Silicone. Then you can easily paint them white with varnish.
You can paint over tiles with these varnishes
At MissPompadour, you will find a varnish that works perfectly as a tile paint. Unlike conventional tile paints, it is also environmentally friendly and has a low odour. This varnish quality, which is particularly suitable for painting tiles, is MissPompadour Eggshell Varnish.
With varnish colours in Eggshell Varnish quality, you can achieve an extremely hard-wearing surface that is also very easy to clean. It is washable, impact-resistant and creates a slightly shimmering, silky matt look. Eggshell Varnish adheres to almost all tiles, although there are a few exceptions: Waxed or otherwise impregnated tiles usually cannot be painted, nor can tiles with a lotus effect.
Neutral classic: white tile paint for all rooms
Of course, you can paint tiles in any room indoors with white varnish. Perhaps your kitchen has a tiled splashback in the wet and cooking area. In the past, these wall tiles were often decorated with patterns that no longer inspire us today. Applying white tile paint can work wonders and create a subtle plain surface.
Due to the wide range of white tones, the result is always individual: colour pigments are often discreetly added to white varnishes to create different shades of colour. There are shades of white that are enlivened by a touch of red, such as White with Powder. Others, such as White with Linden Green, contain a hint of green.
These pigments are barely visible in themselves, but have an influence on their combination colours. A white with a slight yellow tinge, such as White with Ginger, goes particularly well with other shades of yellow. A dark-toned white such as White with Character harmonises with grey. If you are planning to paint a surface in two colours with tile paint, you should make sure that the colour pigments of your white tone match your combination colour. This will give you a harmonious result.
White tile paint in the bathroom
In the bathroom and toilet, the remodelling begins with a thorough clean. MissPompadour To Clean reliably removes all dirt, limescale and grease residues from every tile. If necessary, coat your silicone joints with To Seal Silicone and prime with To Bond & Block.
If you paint your bathroom and toilet tiles with white varnish, you should start by applying varnish to the joints with a brush. You can then apply the varnish to the primed tiles with a roller. If you are also painting the wall tiles in the shower, finish the coating with a layer of MissPompadour To Seal. This topcoat provides extra protection for heavily used tiles. Eggshell Varnish is not suitable for floor tiles in the shower as it does not tolerate standing water.
Painting tiles white in the hallway
The hallway in the entrance area of a house is often tiled. In older houses, the colour of the tiles is often no longer considered contemporary. The only solution is to change the colour of the tiles. If you shy away from the dirt and expense of a renovation, including ripping out the tiles, simply paint the floor tiles in the colour of your choice. Here, too, you can achieve a great result with a colour shade in white or light grey.
The first step is to clean the tiles thoroughly and apply a primer. You could then treat the floor with white tile paint first and decorate the somewhat delicate white coating with a great pattern in a vibrant colour. You can find a large selection of stencils for this at MissPompadour. After all, the colours of all the varnishes in the collection go well with white. Finally, you should stabilise varnishes on the floor with MissPompadour To Seal to give these surfaces an extra layer of protection against daily foot traffic.
Tile lacquer in white: neutral combination with colourful kitchen cabinets
Not every kitchen is white. Some people love colours on kitchen furniture or walls, be they green or blue, red, orange or yellow. To give colourful furniture or walls the edge, it's better to keep the other colours in the room subdued. You should therefore neutralise a coloured backsplash in the kitchen with white varnish.
Cleaning with MissPompadour Cleaner is particularly important in the kitchen, where cooking always leaves a slight greasy residue. Please avoid aggressive, chlorinated and highly alkaline cleaning agents. They could get stuck in the joints of the tiles and destroy your coating later. After priming, apply the white varnish twice.
Painting floor tiles with white tile varnish in the utility room
Even a utility room could do with a refresh. Just like the wall tiles, the floor tiles are primed with To Bond & Block. White varnishes can then be applied. For floor tiles, please do not forget to finish with MissPompadour To Seal!
Normally, the varnish quality Eggshell Varnish is not only suitable for indoor use, but also for outdoor use. However, although it tolerates water well, it cannot withstand standing water in the long term, so the varnish should only be used indoors on floor tiles.

Frequently asked questions and answers about white tile paint
- Can dark tiles be painted white?
Yes, this is possible without any problems. 2 coats of paint should be enough to make a surface white. The only exception is the colour shade White with White. As this colour does not contain any additional colour pigments, it does not cover as well. All other shades of white are unproblematic. - Why is matt white tile paint not suitable?
Matt surfaces are always more sensitive than semi-gloss or smooth surfaces. We therefore do not recommend them as tile paint. - Are the joints visually lost when painting white?
Yes, this is usually desirable because it creates a much calmer appearance. However, if you want to contrast the colour of your joints and have a steady hand, you can accentuate them again after painting with a fine brush and a contrasting colour.
