Looking for a change? Paint old tiles orange with tile paint!
In the 1970s, bathrooms with very vibrant tiles, often in shades of orange, were modern. After that, they were frowned upon for a long time. However, a bathroom with an orange colour scheme can certainly look modern! If you want to bring this warm, friendly chic into your bathroom, paint your tiles with orange tile paint.

Here you'll find everything you need for your project. ⮕
Orange tile colour: vibrant & eye-catching
Orange colours have a reputation for being vibrant and eye-catching, and not without good reason. However, this really doesn't apply to all shades of orange. There are wonderfully soft, muted colour shades that make a bathroom appear warm and cosy. If you paint the wall tiles and floor tiles in one or two of these colours, you can transform your bathroom into a real oasis of well-being. You can also finish the kitchen splashback or the tiled floor in the entrance area with a beautiful orange colour.
Painting tiles with orange tile paint: Is that even possible?
Before you tackle a project like this, you will no doubt ask yourself a few questions. Will the tile paint even adhere to smooth surfaces? How will the colour react if it comes into constant contact with water? Maybe your tiles also have a patterned texture and you're wondering how it will look after painting. The answer is: Yes, tile paint holds super well on most types of tiles. Exceptions are waxed or otherwise impregnated tiles, as well as tiles with a lotus effect. So make sure that your tiles are not among the exceptions before you order varnishes. You will see that if you pay attention to a few things, painting wall tiles or floor tiles is not complicated at all.
Paint tiles orange with this varnish
MissPompadour offers a varnish quality that is a veritable tile colour. You can apply the Eggshell Varnish varnish on the floor, but also on the wall as a tile colour. The product creates a silky matt, elegant surface that beautifully accentuates your chosen orange colour shade. This colour can withstand water, but not standing water. This orange varnish can therefore be applied to the interior walls of the shower without any problems, but not to the shower floor tiles.
What preparatory work is required to paint orange tile paint?
It is very important to clean the tiles first. This is because there must be no dirt or dust residue on the surface. In rooms where cooking takes place and where there is therefore always a slight greasy odour, you must ensure that the surface of the tiles is completely free of grease. In the bathroom, there must be no limescale residue on the wall tiles. It is best to use the mild but effective MissPompadour Cleaner. Avoid aggressive, chlorinated cleaning agents or strongly alkaline cleaning agents at all costs. Residues from these can get stuck in the rough joints and destroy your tile coating.
Are there silicone joints in your bathroom? It is well known that paint does not adhere to silicone. So cover them with a thin brush and MissPompadour To Seal Silicone. The primer and tile colour will then adhere later.
The To Bond & Blockprimer is then applied to the entire surface. It ensures that your tile colour adheres perfectly to the smooth surface of the wall or floor. It also creates an even surface appearance so that you can simply paint away coloured patterns on old tiles.
How is the orange tile paint applied?
Once the primer has dried, it's time for the actual coat of tile paint. Paint on the Eggshell Varnish twice so that you achieve good coverage. The joints are simply painted as well. This creates a nice, smooth look. Use a brush for the joints and Roller for the wall surfaces.
Finally, you should stabilise your coat of paint on the floor with MissPompadour To Seal. If you are painting wall tiles in the shower, you should also seal them at the end. The varnish is not suitable for floor tiles in the shower as it does not tolerate standing water.
Orange tile varnish for interesting accents in many rooms
Orange tile paint can have a great effect not only in the bathroom and kitchen. Maybe you paint a small guest toilet with tile paint in a warm, friendly orange like MissPompadour Orange with Chestnut. Or you could go for a stronger colour like Orange with Goldfish, as you don't spend much time in a toilet and a strong colour shade like this is a real eye-catcher. If you don't just want to paint the tiles, but also the rest of the walls and ceiling, you can also find matching orange wall paints for all shades of Eggshell Varnishes at MissPompadour.
Tiled splashback in orange in the kitchen
Underline your living style with an orange tile colour, because orange is always an appetising and conversation-stimulating colour shade. Make sure that every tile is carefully cleaned of grease, especially in rooms where cooking takes place. You could paint your tiling in a warm shade like Orange with Rust to create a Mediterranean atmosphere in your kitchen. Use MissPompadour To Bond & Block before painting. As water is often used in the kitchen and there is a lot of mopping, protect the finish of your tiled splashback with To Seal.
Orange tile elements on floor tiles
For flooring in kitchens, entrance areas or bathrooms, it is a good idea to decorate tiles with a pattern. Use one of the interesting MissPompadour stencils for this. You can also print the tiles with 2 or 3 different shades of orange or brown. Maybe use Brown with Terracotta as the base colour and paint your pattern in a bright orange like Orange with Tangerine? For an extra layer of protection, seal the paint on your floor tiles with To Seal so that they can withstand heavy wear and frequent cleaning for a long time.
