Painting tiles with grey-grey varnish - is that even possible?
If you want to paint tiles, it is essential to remove all dirt from them first. Limescale residue, which often sticks to tiles in the bathroom, grease residue in the kitchen and all dirt and dust must be removed before you can start painting your tiles with grey paint. We recommend the mild but effective cleaning agent MissPompadour To Clean. Never use aggressive cleaners that contain chlorine or are highly alkaline. These cleaning agents may remain in the rough joints and later destroy your grey-grey varnish.
To ensure that your grey varnish adheres well and securely to the smooth surface of the tiles, you should apply a primer coat of Bonding & Blocking Primer To Bond & Block after cleaning. This step is particularly important on very smooth tiles and floor tiles. The primer creates a perfect base for the grey varnish and guarantees secure adhesion of the varnish.
You can paint tiles light grey to dark grey with this tile paint
The Eggshell Varnish from MissPompadour is not only a wood, metal, plastic and stone varnish, but also an environmentally friendly, low-odour tile varnish. It is washable, impact-resistant and generally very stable, making it ideal for your project.
If you are painting tiles on the floor, you should additionally stabilise the surface after painting by painting over everything with MissPompadour To Seal. This is because a floor is particularly stressed by pressure, impact and scratching and should also be able to withstand frequent cleaning with cleaning agents. An additional sealing layer therefore protects the colour.
Eggshell Varnish lasts on almost all tiles, although there are a few exceptions: Waxed or otherwise impregnated tiles usually cannot be painted, nor can tiles with a lotus effect. Silicone grout joints, however, pose no problem: Paint over them with MissPompadour To Seal Silicone. Then you can easily paint them black with Black with Black varnish.
Simple and versatile at the same time: painting tiles in the colour grey
Grey is a subtle and understated colour shade in every facet, which does not push itself to the fore and is compatible with many other colours. You can also take advantage of this if you are planning to paint tiles. Grey varnishes are available in many variations and degrees of brightness. From light grey to rich anthracite, the range of grey paints at MissPompadour Paint offers shades of grey from light to dark.
And of course, not every grey colour shade is mixed in the same way. There are grey shades that have a friendly effect thanks to light, but also dark umber or green components. Other grey colours have a little brown pigment added to them, giving painted grey tiles a warm and cosy appearance. Grey colours can also be given a maritime look by adding a little blue. Tile paint in grey with a little red pigment gives all rooms with grey tiles a very sophisticated finish.
It is also worth choosing the grey of a tile paint carefully. Depending on which pigments have been mixed into the grey tile paint, a grey can have a very different appearance. This is why grey tiles are not as neutral as you might think at first glance. Especially in combination with other colour shades, it is important to pay attention to which pigments have been added to a grey. The human eye more or less unconsciously makes a connection between the colours in the room and if this is not correct, grey tiles may not harmonise with their surroundings.
Grey: renovating tiles in the bathroom
A very soft grey such as Grey with Seasalt or a rich graphite such as Black with Slate can completely transform a bathroom in an instant. Grey tiles with a combination of fresh white and some natural wood accents create a feel-good environment that you can enjoy every day. The bathroom in particular is often a room that does not have a window to provide it with natural light. Here it is important to work with light colours such as the warm Grey with Linen. Or you can combine tile paint in dark grey in the lower wall area with a fresh, bright yellow on the upper wall tiles and on the ceiling. All grey colour shades from MissPompadour are also available as grey wall paints.
Years or even decades ago, it was fashionable to place colourful tiles or tiles with patterns between neutral tiles. Don't let this put you off your project. Simply paint away these tiles with 2 coats of paint. If you paint over tiles with grey tile paint, the joints will also be painted. This results in a calm look, which is usually what is desired.
Eggshell Varnish is suitable for wall tiles in the bathroom. If you paint the wall tiles in the shower, you should finish the coat with a layer of topcoat. Eggshell Varnish is not recommended for floor tiles on which standing water frequently collects - such as in the shower tray or in the bathroom in general.
Grey backsplash in the kitchen: versatile combinations
If you want to redesign your kitchen, why not start with the tiled splashback? In the kitchen in particular, it is important to remove any greasy residue from the tiles. Use MissPompadour To Clean, followed by the primer To Bond & Block. Then nothing stands in the way of painting grey tiles. Grey tiles can also be combined well with colourful kitchen cabinets in yellow, blue or green. Eggshell Varnish is also suitable for this purpose. If you want to create an industrial atmosphere, go for the colour shade Grey with Concrete.
Match floor tiles to the interior design
Tiles are often found in living areas such as hallways. If the hallway is getting on in years and no longer really matches the style of the other rooms in the house, why not conjure up dark grey tiles there? The different shades of dark grey are hard-wearing and street dirt won't be noticed so quickly. Maybe match the colour shade to the varnishes on the stairs. With its brown pigments, MissPompadour Grey with Peat harmonises very well with various types of wood.
Not only a wooden staircase, but also a stone basement staircase can be painted wonderfully with the same product, the Eggshell Varnish quality. It is also a great idea to design grey tiles in 2 or 3 shades of grey. You can use the MissPompadour Stencils for this. These stencils are available in many interesting designs in a wide variety of styles. Of course, you can use them to creatively design more than just the floor.
