Areas of application for varnishes in grey

Like any other colour shade, grey varnish can be used in a variety of ways both inside and outside a house. Grey paint can be used as wood paint on furniture, stairs or wooden ceilings. Wooden window frames and doors in the interior can also be given a new look with a grey paint. This also applies to exterior window frames and the front door or garage door. However, grey paint is also often used on other surfaces in and around the house. Grey wall paints are also popular.

Grey varnishes: classics for metal doors & windows

Grey varnish is not only used for wood. Good results can also be achieved with grey-grey varnish on metal. Grey paint is particularly popular for metal doors in basements. But metal window frames can also be painted with grey-grey varnish. Darker grey tones such as Grey with Black are often used for this. Grey with Peat, which is a great natural shade with its brown and green tones, is also a good choice.

If you want to finish metal with grey colour shades, it is important to apply a primer under the actual varnish. Priming with To Bond & Block allows the varnish to adhere well to the smooth metal. If you are painting rusty metal, remove the rust thoroughly and apply a rust protection primer first.

If you want a completely matt surface, use the MissPompadour Matt Varnish or CosyColours chalk varnish for the interior. This grey matt varnish creates velvety matt surfaces that are also perfect for the used look. If you want the surface to have a slight sheen and are looking for a particularly easy-care lacquer quality, use the MissPompadour Eggshell Varnish. This varnish is also perfect for outdoor use. Both varnishes are low-odour and do not splatter.

Grey wood varnish for changing the character of furniture

Grey varnish is also used on wooden furniture. Because grey shades are available in many colours, you can perfectly match the surfaces of your wooden furniture to the other colour shades in the room. The soft Grey with Seasalt is an almost white grey. It can be combined in a variety of ways thanks to its umber colour.

If you are painting wood with grey furniture paint and your wood has a lot of stains or noticeable knotholes, you should pre-paint with MissPompadour To Bond & Block. This will prevent tannins from bleeding into the new coat. The primer will also give your furniture an evenly coloured surface, making it easy to apply the grey paint. This gives you an evenly covering coat of paint.

Grey varnish for use on plastics of all kinds

Grey varnish can be used not only on wood or metal, indoors and outdoors. You can also embellish plastic or rigid PVC with grey paint. Why not paint a boring chest of drawers from Ikea in a fashionable shade of grey? You won't recognise it!

But it doesn't matter whether you want to paint plastic indoors or outdoors: Always work on plastic with a primer such as MissPompadour To Bond & Block. It allows the paint to adhere well to smooth surfaces.

Paint tiles, stone and concrete with grey coloured paint

Grey varnish is not just a furniture or metal colour. Grey varnish can be used on a wide variety of substrates. Varnish in grey is also popular on a substrate such as concrete, screed or stone, as found on a basement staircase. The natural, rough grey of Grey with Concrete exactly reproduces the colour shade of this material. It goes fantastically well with black, but also with Beige with Cashmere.

Tiles in particular tend to last longer than their modern pattern. It would be a shame to throw them out when the alternative is so simple: repaint them with grey-grey tile paint. If you paint floor tiles, you should finish the coat with a topcoat such as To Seal so that they are extra resilient.

Grey varnish for outdoors

You can paint many outdoor objects with the MissPompadour Eggshell Varnish quality - for example a fence or a wooden garden shed. Wooden or plastic window frames or a PVC-veneered front door can also be finished with grey wood varnish, perhaps even with metallic grey varnish.

Spraying the paint with a paint sprayer makes your work much easier, especially outdoors. The grey varnish can also be sprayed well on large objects such as door leaves. The only important thing when painting outdoors is to choose a varnish quality such as Eggshell Varnish that is weatherproof and stable.

Colour scheme of varnishes in grey

Basically, all colour shades between black and white are called grey. However, grey is rarely a truly neutral colour. Depending on which other pigments are added to a black and white mixture, grey tones take on a completely different character. Grey with brown creates a different effect than grey with blue. Grey varnishes must therefore also be carefully matched to the other colour shades in the room.

Grey with Warmth is one of the very light grey tones with a large proportion of white. It is a friendly shade of grey that contains a little umber pigment. Grey with Linen is light and harmonises with many other colour shades thanks to its greenish umber admixture. Grey with Morning Dew is one of the more intense grey tones and goes particularly well with red tones. Grey with Grey is a really neutral grey tone in the middle between black and white. Very dark, and therefore almost anthracite, is Grey with Black. Black with Slate is a shade darker still.

In the LittlePomp chalk varnishes children's collection, you will find two balanced shades of grey: the soft Grey & Relaxed and the intense Grey & Mindful. You will also find some beautiful grey varnish colours among the CosyColours chalk varnishes. Warm Grey, for example, impresses with its brown tones that create a cosy atmosphere and the rich Secret Grey is already a near-black shade.

From dark grey to light grey: order varnishes from MissPompadour

If you are looking for the perfect grey varnish for your project, it is best to order a colour card set from MissPompadour online. The colour cards in postcard format can be removed individually and you can examine and compare the individual shades of grey in any lighting.

All grey varnishes from MissPompadour are available as Eggshell Varnish. Eggshell Varnish is the first choice for coatings on surfaces subject to heavy wear, for example on tiles or kitchen cabinets. This slightly shimmering lacquer quality is washable, impact-resistant and also suitable for outdoor use. Matt Varnish is an elegant matt lacquer that can also be wiped off with a damp cloth, but is particularly suitable as a furniture colour for less stressed statement pieces.

There are also the chalk varnishes from the LittlePomp collection. These soft pastel shades were created with children's psychology in mind, but are also suitable for any other room. The CosyColours chalk varnishes are also available in more than 30 colour shades.

If you order varnishes online from MissPompadour, be sure to order a great brush from MissPompadour with your delivery. It makes painting twice as much fun.

Frequently asked questions about painting with Grey-grey varnish

  • Can painted metal be painted over?
In principle, you can paint over all old paintwork. The only requirement is that the old paint is undamaged and has a smooth surface. If this is not the case or the old varnish is flaking off, it must be sanded.
  • What types of paint are there?
The paint types are named differently depending on the manufacturer. Some companies produce different varnishes for different surfaces. At MissPompadour, the distinction is made according to the resilience of the varnish. You can use all 3 of our varnishes as wood varnish and furniture varnish. They are also suitable for painting metal and plastics. You just have to think about it: Do you want a completely matt look for a piece of furniture that is not subject to much wear and tear? Then go for Matt Varnish. Are you painting outdoor areas or heavily used surfaces in the kitchen or bathroom? Then use Eggshell Varnish. Do you want to paint with chalk varnish? Then our LittlePomp and CosyColours collections are the right choice.
