Painting over tiles with beige varnish - is it possible?
Everyone who wants to paint over tiles wonders how this is supposed to work. Will the paint even stick to the smooth surface? The answer is yes! With the right preparation and the right beige varnish, nothing stands in the way of transforming your bathroom.
First of all, preparation is very important. If you want to use tile varnish, thorough cleaning of your tiles is essential. Be sure to use a mild cleaner such as MissPompadour To Clean - aggressive, chlorinated or highly alkaline cleaning agents can destroy a subsequent coat of paint.
You should also apply a primer before the first coat of paint so that the colour can adhere well to the smooth surface. To Bond & Block also creates an even surface.
And what do I do with the silicone joints? Do they have to be removed? Silicone joints are not a problem: Paint over them with MissPompadour To Seal Silicone. Then you can easily paint them with varnish beige.
You can paint over tiles with this varnish
At MissPompadour, you will find a varnish quality that is not only suitable for wood, metal, plastic and stone, but is also perfect for painting tiles. It is the varnish Eggshell Varnish, which is available in all colour shades of the Simply Paint collection, including many beige shades. In contrast to conventional tile paint, this varnish is also sustainable, environmentally friendly and low-odour. Eggshell Varnish tile paint is impact-resistant and washable. This makes it suitable for many surfaces.
Does this varnish have enough opacity to reliably cover any patterns or dark colours? Yes, definitely! Normally 2 coats are enough to cover the old colour.
Eggshell Varnish adheres to almost all tiles, although there are a few exceptions: Waxed or otherwise impregnated tiles usually cannot be painted, nor can tiles with a lotus effect. You see, painting tiles is not complicated at all. As always with MissPompadour: just paint!
Beige tiles: Warm and versatile to combine
Beige is a light colour shade straight from nature. It is made up of white and brown. Beige tones can vary greatly depending on which other pigments are added to the colour. But beige always looks warm, friendly and cosy. Beige shades such as Beige with Sand remind us of walks on the beach by the sea, while others, such as Beige with Cashmere, are light and neutral.
That's why it's a good idea to paint over tiles in the bathroom that you no longer like with this soft colour. But a tiled splashback in the kitchen or the tiled floor in the entrance area can also benefit from a coat of beige paint. Beige is easy to combine with other colours.
The only thing you should consider when choosing the colour shade is whether your beige tile paint is mixed with yellow or contains pink pigments. These pigments have an impact on which combination colours match. Brown tones such as MissPompadour Brown with Dark Chocolate go wonderfully with beige tones, but a rich anthracite grey such as Black with Slate or, even darker, Black with Velvet also go very well. A dark green such as Green with Forest also harmonises with beige tile colour. In any combination, beige creates a cosy, warm atmosphere.
Paint bathroom tiles beige with tile paint
A boring, grey-tiled bathroom can be given a whole new look with a new beige design. Even old 70s bathrooms, sometimes in bold colours and patterns, can be given a new, contemporary look with beige wall tiles. The best thing is that no tiles need to be removed and no tradesmen need to be involved. You save yourself all the mess and get a great result at a manageable cost.
It is important to thoroughly remove dirt, dust, grease and, above all, limescale from the tiles before painting. The mild MissPompadour Cleaner To Clean is ideal for this. Never use aggressive, chlorinated or highly alkaline cleaners. These can leave residues in the rough joints and make painting more difficult.
Is silicone used in your bathroom? As you probably know, silicone cannot be painted over as no colour sticks to it. But you can with To Seal Silicone. Simply apply a thin coat of primer with a brush and leave to dry, then pre-treat the entire surface with To Bond & Block. By applying this primer, you create an even surface to which the tile paint can adhere perfectly. Now nothing stands in the way of painting with tile paint.
The tiles on the floor can also be treated with tile paint in beige colours. You will probably find that pure beige tile paint on the floor is too sensitive to dirt. But perhaps you could embellish the surface painted with tile paint with an interesting design. At MissPompadour, you'll find great stencils that you can use to conjure up attractive patterns in any style on your floor.
After painting, we recommend stabilising the floor with MissPompadour To Seal. Sealing makes the floor surface matt. And it makes your coating harder. This is because floor tiles are subjected to more wear and tear than wall tiles and have to withstand regular cleaning agents. You should also seal wall tiles in the shower as they are more exposed to water. As the varnish Eggshell Varnish does not tolerate standing water, we do not recommend painting the floor tiles in the shower.
Varnish in beige on tiles in the kitchen
Kitchens often have a tiled splashback in the wet or cooking area. Are these tiles possibly patterned and no longer match your kitchen furniture? Then simply paint them with tile paint.
In the kitchen, you should take particular care to clean the tiles well before applying tile paint. This is because cooking always leaves a slight residue of grease. The tile paint cannot adhere to this. It is best to work with the mild MissPompadour To Clean. Never use an aggressive chlorine cleaner or strongly alkaline grease remover. These can get stuck in the rough grout and destroy your varnish after cleaning.
After cleaning, you should prime with To Bond & Block. The tile paint will adhere perfectly to this primer, even on the smoothest surfaces such as ceramic. The tile paint is then applied twice. If you want your surface to be even harder, finish it with To Seal.
Paint the tiles: Beige can brighten up dark hallways
Hallways often don't have windows. That's why it makes sense to freshen them up with a light-coloured varnish on the floor. However, the beige tile colour must not be too sensitive. It would be a good idea to use different colours here. First apply the beige varnish and then stencil 1 or 2 other shades with a MissPompadour stencil. Maybe use Beige with homeheartmade as the base colour, Grey with Peat for your pattern and Grey with Brown for small accents?
To make your coating even harder, apply To Seal to the floor tiles at the end. This gives the surface a matt finish and additional protection. If you also want to paint the walls, you can also find matching beige wall paints at MissPompadour.
Order beige tile paint from MissPompadour
MissPompadour offers an interesting selection of beige colour shades: Beige with Cashmere is one of them. This very light, soft colour shade is rounded off with a little grey and yellow pigment. A light colour shade of the colour wet sand is Beige with Sand. It goes wonderfully with blue tones such as Blue with Cloud and creates a maritime ambience. You can also combine it with dark anthracite. The fresh Beige with Peach impresses with its slightly reddish colour tones. It goes well with reddish brown tones, but also with red and orange tones.
It is best to order a set of colour cards to compare the individual beige shades with each other. The colour cards can be removed individually. You can therefore attach them to your tiles and view them in any light.
Once you have made your decision, you can also order brushes and rollers at the same time as the colour. You will then only have to pay shipping costs once. Our project sets are customisable shopping aids that ensure you never forget a product!
